The New York Yankees Drop a Ton of Money Vegas-Style on Pitching

The Yankees have already been generating a certain amount of interest, piqued albeit for some time now. With Nick Swisher as one of their latest acquisitions, coming through last off-season, it remains to be seen what happens to the pitching efforts. For now, all the indications are pointing towards CC Sabathia. And it must be said here that this is where all the fire is coming from!

It has been widely reported that Sabathia would be signed for a whopping amount of about $140 Million Dollars - The most for any free-agent pitcher in the history of the game. It remains to be seen if Sabathia can justify the kind of money paid to him with his pitching efforts. One thing is for sure though - There is big money here, almost Vegas-style.

As on the 2nd December, it must be said that no decision has been forthcoming from Sabathia on whether he would be joining the Yankees. It has been a time of unending wait for Manager, Brian Cashman. It could be fair to say that if he checks in to the Ballagio suite today and yet no response from Sabathia, it could be a good 21 days since the first move was made.

On the other side of the river, you would find that Greg Genske, the agent of Sabathia is extremely careful of making the moves. As of now, it would be fair in saying that both the sides are weighing their options on the signing of Sabathia. But we thought that the delay is from the pitcher himself?

It indeed is, but Cashman is no fool to keep sitting around. At least, that's not what he is paid the fat salary for. It is here that Cashman has played smart. Understanding that it is a free agent market, he is also pitched in for A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. In a year of attrition and transfers that has seen a lot of players switching loyalties, it surely must be said that who comes in to the Yankees will be wrapped in a lot of surprise at least for some more days to come.

The one thing that must be appreciated here is the commitment of the Yankees' management to field a top class team. They definitely have a choice to flex their muscles and win pitchers hands down. But as of now, it seems that the management including the co-chairman want to take a more cautious process.

"Let us go by the process" - seems to be the rant coming out of the Yankees' Headquarters. Going by the process they are, but both the people and the media are equally surprised by the long drawn out battle. It already has been three weeks now, and there seems to be no sight of any pitcher joining in the Yankees. Who knows how much longer it would take? One thing is for sure - in terms of acquiring a player, this deal surely has to be one of the longest and most stretched out.
