With the cost of visiting a skin specialist today, your first course of action should be to try the standard remedies found at your local pharmacy without a perscription. There are a number of products on the market, so you'll need to do your homework or visit internet review sites comparing various brands and what they say they do and what others report they do or don't do.

The following substances are the most effective active ingredients in over-the-counter acne treatments:

· Benzyl Peroxide
· Salicylic Acid
· Sulfur
· Recorcinal

You don't necessasrily have to buy the top name brands in order to get the same amount of these medications. Read labels and if you have a neighbor pharmacy, chances are the pharmacist is just as knowledgeable about over-the-counter medications as the prescription variety.

From creams to medicated pads to cleansing cloths to peel-off strips, you will find a variety of measures to take. Be careful not to combine them. Use one for a couple of weeks. Unless your condition worsens visibly, give the medication a chance to work. Over-the-counter remedies are not as powerful as prescriptions can be, so it will take some time to see results.

A more expensive solution that is still self-administered, is to purchase an acne treatment kit online or by phone. Thousands of people have been satisfied with such systems. But they're not for everyone. Buyer beware.

Be aware that if you call about a TV ad, you may be encouraged to order double, to commit to an automatic monthly order or to buy related products. It is your right to say "no" to all of these.

One effective technique is to simply stop the sales representative from going through the entire line of upsells ("Would you like fries with that?") and to say firmly, "I will cancel my order if you do not process what I want right now." If they give you any trouble, ask to talk to the supervisor or just hang up. It's not your responsibility to line their pockets when all you want is a solution to your acne problem.

It's vital that you follow all labeled instructions on any acne treatment, especially how often and how much. Of course, that is good common sense advice regardless of whether you are self-treating or under a doctor's care. Remember, if your condition worsens or you see scarring, stop all treatments and see your family doctor as soon as possible.
