Of all the insects that act as vectors in spreading diseases to man and other animals; mosquitoes are by far the most unique.

They not only spread malaria, yellow fever and dengue to human beings, they also do transmit heartworms in dogs and viral encephalitis in horses. Studies show that, there are about 50 species of mosquitoes in the World. This is far more than any other insect.

Mosquitoes have been found to show some characteristics that are relatively unique from other insects. For instance an adult mosquito has organs that act as a sensor which assist them in tracking their prey. These sensors include:

Chemical sensors - These features found only in mosquitoes are said to sense carbon (IV) oxide and lactic acid from a distance as far as 100 feet (36 meters) away. The mammal and birds families emit these gases as part of their normal gaseous exchange mechanism. These chemicals and other emitted in sweat attracts mosquitoes. Researches show that individuals who rarely sweat much don't attract many mosquito bites.

Visual sensors - Mosquitoes are said to track on the prey as it moves even when wearing cloths that have a big contrasts with the background. Using the visual sensors, mosquitoes can see you and zero in on you. To mosquitoes anything moving is "alive", and full of blood, hence a good target.

Heat sensors - Unlike other insects mosquitoes can detect heat, this heat sensors help in finding warm-blooded mammals and birds without any difficult.

Apart from body features Mosquitoes are considered unique from other insects. Simply because they can inhabit and breed in virtually any habitat on earth; they have been found in the Arctic Circle to the tropics. However they never inhabit salty.

The other unique factor about Mosquitoes is there feeding behavior. Whereas most insects both male and female feed on the same type of feed; the female mosquito feeds on animal blood-feeding while the male are nectar feeders. The females require the protein in blood to produce fertile eggs.

Controlling mosquitoes requires more money and resources than the control of any other insect. Larger cities and tourist destinations often have larger control programs with full-time staffs, to check on the mosquitoes increase. While smaller cities and towns have mosquitoes controlling programs where the staff used have other duties else where in addition to mosquito control. For instance the Mississippi state has an estimated 200 mosquito control programs. The total budget of controlling mosquitoes is not easier to estimate, but the United States of America estimates an approximately $1 billion annually is spent in controlling dog heartworms.

It’s quite difficult to control mosquitoes around your home. The whole exercise can be frustrating. Many species of mosquitoes can fly miles from their watery larval habitats. Some mosquito species are found to be resistant to most chemicals used in their control.

Mosquitoes unlike other insects when in the mating season, they produce a buzzing sound which male mosquitoes can hear each other from quite a distance, it’s estimated to be approximately one feet or 3.3 feet.

According to Gabriella Gibson a mosquito expert at the University of Greenwich “Every species of mosquitoes has its own unique buzzing song” The buzzing style is used for attracting male mosquitoes for mating.
