Effects of Pornography on Your Brain
Pornography can be found everywhere from on our computers, to television, to marketing ads. Once we see it and our brains interact with the thought processes involved, our minds begin to go into overload and function almost solely on biological need. We find out minds wandering and cannot help but process repeatedly what we just saw.
According to Dr. Judith Reisman, the brain enters a near zombie-like state due to a mixture of oxyticin, dopamine, serotonin, and testosterone known as an “erototoxin”. Once released into our system, a frightening change takes place, which we have no control over. The impulses created by these chemicals may result in destructive habits unless kept in touch by our inner voices like our ego. Reisman states she has found that erototoxins are not the positive reaction a person might initially believe, as they do not crease pleasure, but instead a "fear-sex-shame-and-anger stimulant".
Furthermore, Reisman believes that anyone who looks at pornography long enough will “rot” their brains and as they will be acting from while underneath that influence, should no longer be protected by the first amendment. This is a surprising bit of research which if confirmed may lead to more prosecutions in court cases and the removal of certain defensive tactics for lawyers.
Dr. Gary Lunch of the University of California appears to agree with Reisman after conducting his own separate research. "What we are saying here is that an event which lasts half a second, within five to ten minutes has produced a structural change that is in some ways as profound as the structural changes one sees in [brain] damage." (Gary Lunch, The Brain and the Nervous System).
Many people would dismiss looking at pornography as being a harmless and even recreational way to spend his or her time. However, if the above research is true, the effects of pornography on your brain could be a long-lasting result, which you will feel for years to come even if you are not aware of it.
Both doctors feel that pornography is very destructive to the individual and should be outlawed. In one instance, Reisman said, "these toxic media should be legally outlawed, as is all other toxic waste, and eliminated from our societal structure ".
Although the full effect pornography may have on the brain has yet to be mapped, it is certain the effects of pornography on your brain will continue and could possibly have a more negative consequence than you might expect.
